The Moonlight Sonata is one of the most popular and most-played piano sonatas from Beethoven’s creation.
It was composed by Beethoven in 1801 in Hungary and was dedicated to Beethoven’s piano student and passion, 17 years old Countess Giulietta Gucciardi.
The original Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor, “Quasi Una Fantasia,” Op. 27, No. 2, has three parts:
I. Adagio Sostenuto
II. Allegretto
III. Presto Agitato
It was admired particularly for its mysterious, gently arpeggiated, and seemingly improvised first movement that received the title of Moonlight Sonata several years after Beethoven’s death. In 1836, German music critic Ludwig Rellstab wrote that the sonata reminded him of the reflected moonlight off Lake Lucerne. Since then, Moonlight Sonata has remained the “official” unofficial title of the sonata.
Many of my Intermediate piano students expressed that they would love to be able to play Moonlight Sonata but thought it would be very hard to do. That’s how I came up with the idea of arranging an Easy Piano Classics Books series, and Moonlight Sonata will be the first in the book.
In the video below, you can listen to an easier version of Moonlight Sonata, which I’ve arranged and recorded.
The piano score was rearranged in the Intermediate level in the key of D Minor and has the same measures as the original piece.
Let the calming, gentle sounds take you away and allow you to relax your mind and body in beautiful harmony.
